What We Do

What we do

Rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing and being, we foster reconciliation by braiding Land-based education, ecological restoration, and community stewardship together for Seven Oaks School Division learners, educators, and the extended community.

We connect with the Seven Oaks School Division's k- 12 and mature learners by welcoming them to visit the Aki Centre multiple times a year. Our space is a shared space where visitors take active roles in learning about and caring for the land. Our focal point remains on relationship building with the land and each other year-round, and our seasonal engagmenta are land-based and land-provoked.

We connect with Cultural Education and the Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program to host traditional land-based activities with the support of Knowledge Keepers and Elders.

We coordinate action projects that aim to sustain at school and day-to day the learning, relationship building, and value-based behaviours modeled at the Aki Centre. We coordinate the divisional composting program and pick up, the Edible Gardens Project (growing edible plants for school gardens), and the Eco-Cultural Restoration Project (growing Indigenous plants for schoolyard restoration projects).

We host regular Professional Development learning days for teachers to orient them to the Centre and its values, which strengthen the ways we co-plan a meaningful, experiential day here.

We connect with the broader community through sharing our 3km trail system, the toboggan hill, volunteer opportunities, and events like Pumpkin Smash and plant gifting.
